Goodreads Doesn't Have It, Data Migration: A Feminist Perspective of Human Trafficking In Women and Girls
Every person who has failed in this work, every person who failed to identify clear cases, every individual who says "playing the victim" when the person fits the criteria of someone part of an ongoing, unresolved crime, every person trying to prematurely call someone a survivor trying to get their cake of "having saved someone" while eating it too (having made none of the actual moves and actions required to actually get that person out of that situation) needs to read this book. I am genuinely filled with disgust. Why do I even have to say this outside of a massive intelligence failure.
"As such, several features of trafficking have been noted in the literature, including the difficulty in identifying trafficking; bias toward victims; increased level of physical and psychological needs of victims; fewer resources for victims; greater concerns about safety; limited access to justice, and the complexity of criminal cases."
"When does the survivor have to fight to survive?" When they are a VICTIM and there hasn't been any competent justice for them yet. They are calling them a survivor before it is due to avoid taking the required responsibility for the crime. They want their cake and to eat it too, only to wonder why the economy and developmental level is collapsing. You cannot have your developmental level and strong economy while trying to take shortcuts. In the same way you cannot build a house on a sponge, you cannot build a country on trying to have your cake and eat it too through a series of loopholes that represent and mean nothing...a series of literal holes in the foundation.
"The covert nature of the crime and lack of a uniform reporting system both contribute to the underreporting of sex trafficking as do other factors that have been identified among human trafficking victims in general such as: (1) victims often do not have access to legal or social services; (2) victims fear retribution from their traffickers; (3) victims are fearful or distrustful of law enforcement; and (4) victims may not self-identify as being trafficked (Bales & Lize, 2007; Goodey, 2008; Hodge & Leitz, 2007; Jones et al., 2007; Logan et al., 2009)." A clear sign of ongoing victimization is somehow the legal system just stops working for them.
This premature survivor insistence when no real judicial action was taken and all the signs show the crime is still ongoing due to this complete weakness and narcissistic collapse trying to get the cake and eat it too is exactly the issue in identifying victims of human trafficking described in the book. How is it that bad that that has to be spelled out? "However, growing difficulties in identifying victims of trafficking (Jahic & Finckenauer, 2005) and persuading survivors to collaborate with prosecutions (Hepburn & Simon, 2010) resulted in increased attention to victim-centered issues in each TVPA reauthorization (Pollock & Hollier, 2010; United States Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, 2010)."
I cannot believe how bad the recognition of trafficking here in Washington State is. Not only have I had to clearly delineate to an actual school principal here that victimology is a real field for the competent and educated treatment of those still part of an ongoing, unresolved crime, but the level of infrastructural collapse legally here shows an ongoing John mentality has infested its way into the local Washington government, and is deeply fed by the Microsoft and Amazon angry testosterone-fueled men with the attending increased autism of excessive testosterone which tends to originate in tech. Ironically, it is just these individuals who feminist-bash and have excessively patriarchal values that cause collapsed relationships. Ironically, these are the first to then be buyers for mail order brides abroad, who then often after being hit, depreciated or commodified then have to seek Western feminist help; for example the book clearly gives a disturbing example of a husband who mail ordered his wife telling the wife when she tried to get educated that he "didn't marry her for her brains". Yet, he still expected their daughter to be a top academic while depreciating her own intelligence. The collapsed logic was real; only through her own effort to protect her education did her child get top marks. They also talk about the commodification of these women and their "on sale/on display" nature being a clear red flag of human trafficking. What's even worse is the fact that the leadership in the area shows all the signs of internalizing values and norms that perpetuate human trafficking and are congruent with John culture, hardly the Nordic models or even anything basically able to even expediently identify human trafficking (the most obvious cases are slipping through the cracks here, showing that there is a great deal of paid money to tamp down the very efforts suggested to clinicians; to help people recognize the signs--creating debt, isolating, commodifying, coercion, the male has all the power and the woman has none solely on her gender--and to clearly go out and engage in social activism to let these women know this is not typical nor is it deserved in the way John culture wants them to think.)
They also mentioned that the signs of sex tourist is he will mention women of their home country being spoiled and thinking they're too good for the men there. Especially in South Asian countries, they will emphasize family and patriarchal values. Ironically, these are the countries with the highest trafficking rates, trafficking their own women. So much for family values. They also have a high man-on-boy pedophile rate. So much for patriarchal values. It's critical to know the red flags of John culture and trafficker culture. Those are the tell-tale signs.
It is horrifying that many of these Slavic women think that those who say the above are an improvement, but in a country with a high homicide rate due to repressed homosexuality issues and a low-tech high-natural resource economy, women are viewed as "natural resources" to sell and exploit as any other. How Russia, with its human trafficking economy and its studying problem, is getting Ukrainian children under fraudulent ICA while they complain the colonist mail order bride problem affects their economy while doing this to Ukraine's children blows my mind. How are you going to claim to be better while actively doing that to another country? It creates a snowball effect where a country that makes the most on human trafficking has a greater economy and then can use its gravity to traffick in more people under fraudulent "greater care" narratives, like the ones used for ICA because the "healthier economy can do the greater care". No it cannot if it is only based on low studying, high natural resource reliance, and human trafficking. It's not even the Russian if they're importing Ukrainian children as future mail order brides to make money on and to not feel bad about it because "they're not even their children". That is seriously sick in the head level.
The massive identification problem of human trafficking shows how Westerners really think they're exempt and that doesn't happen here. People need to know the signs, including isolation, debt creation, commodification, the justice system just magically breaking for the victim and trying to take all power from the woman. These are ALL the signs. The fact that it is happening in the Gates' foundation backyard while this book exists is just horrific. I hope Melinda Gates continues to focus on women and girls, continues to undo internalizing the norms and beliefs of that culture, and continues to fund social and clinical activism to help the victims know they did nothing to deserve this, this is not at all normal and is aberrational for developed nations that know better and therefore value education in women and consider educated women a critical part of the lucrative economy. They need to continue the cessation of the betrayal of the victim by insisting this is not deserved, not called for, and more social activism to help is required. This includes more expedient identification and recognition. The goal is not to save, it is to put more educated, high skill actors into the economy to create more wealth to distribute to more people in need who need help like these individuals and this includes a huge female contribution. Anybody basically decent with math could tell you that. We will lose our economy, infrastructure and developmental ranking while we let values from countries where they literally prostitute their own wives to make money and rape their own little boys take over.
"Therefore, clinicians must hold the tension between recognizing the dynamic yet contradictory nature of such marriages, and listen for how their clients may have been influenced at both individual and systemic levels, often internalizing values and norms."
